Each cycle DeBakey High School celebrates students’ achievements. This event shows the school’s efforts to give due recognition to students who are performing well and to motivate others to do their best to excel in their classes.
Students, teachers, staff and parents were present to recognize students Cycle 1 Honor Roll Award recipients. Students who achieved all A’s in all their classes, received the ‘Honor Roll’ certificate and students with All A’s and one B, received the ‘High Achiever’ certificate.
Additionally, ‘DeBakey Citizenship’ certificates are awarded to students who have applied the core values of DeBakey (Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, and Honesty).
During interviews with some award recipients, a Grade 9 student Malak Ayoub, who received both the Honor Roll and Citizenship awards, said that she felt proud for receiving these awards. “I am motivated to continue getting these awards,” she added.
Another student, Jana Altay, from Grade 6, received High Achiever, and Citizenship awards. She exclaimed, “I feel happy and I want to continue because it raises my self-esteem.”
Khalifa Al Abdullah, a senior (Grade 12) who got a High Achiever Award, and Ali Al Kuradaghi, a Grade 11 student who received an Honor Award, said that they want to continue to do their best so that they may earn other awards too.
The rational of the high Achiever Award is to give students “a chance to be rewarded and celebrate their success,” as well as to “motivate them” to keep on earning good grades.
“The importance of the method of selecting the citizenship awards is to ensure DeBakey students apply the school core values while communicating with all faculty and staff. They made us proud” Mrs. Sbaitah noted.

SAT Preparation
The SAT is a very important exam that is necessary for college admissions. This test should be taken in Grade 11. In preparation for the SAT, we hold practice exams at school.

For Grade 8 students who already pre-registered, the exam will take place on April 11, 2017 during school hours (as test booklets have been ordered, exam registration has been closed).
For Grade 9 students, Score Plus will administer a practice/diagnostic exam to further expose familiarity of the exam structure and timings. A sign-up list will be sent closer to the exam date, April 27, 2017.
Grade 11 students interested in taking the Princeton Review SAT Prep course should refer to ‘P-Memo 29’ for all relevant details.
At home practice is also possible through the Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/parent
We are always here to provide further insight if needed!

Note from the Director
We thank you for attending our Parent Orientation. As our Cycle 1 instruction progresses, please continue to reinforce studies at home during Cycle 1 exams. Our teachers are more than willing to receive correspondence from you to ensure each students’ success.
Parent Commitment
It is vital that every student receive reinforcement at home. We encourage all of our parents to ask their child questions about the academic instruction he or she is receiving everyday.
Simple positive questions to ask:
- What was the best thing that happened at school today? (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?)
- When were you the happiest today?
- If I called your teacher tonight, what would he/she tell me about you?
- How did you help somebody today?
- Do you have homework today?
- Did you understand the topics discussed today?
To ensure students’ success, it is best for parents to inquire with their child to see if he or she needs additional help outside of the classroom. The more communication & interaction every parent has with the teachers, the better progress and success your child will be able to accomplish.

Please encourage your child’s enthusiasm!
Admissions
DeBakey High School – Qatar is now accepting applications for the 2016 – 2017 School Year! We are considering applications for grades 7 – 10 only. If you have any children or relatives who would like to be considered for next school year’s enrollment, now is the time to begin the application process.
A few requirements have changed for the next school year. Please visit the Admissions link located on the website for more information.
RenWeb Access
This is a reminder that our RenWeb system is an excellent tool for parents to use to keep track of their child’s academic performance in class.
The school will continue to send progress reports halfway through each cycle, but RenWeb allows ongoing access to student: grades, conduct, and tardy/absence recordings. Teacher contact information is also available through the RenWeb system. Please use the link below for directions on how to set up a Parent RenWeb account if you do not currently have access.
